iPad apps the new standard textbook?

After watching the video and reading the following articles what are you initial thoughts about the transition Apple is proposing to move away from standard 10 pound textbooks to iBooks that can be read, stored, and used like a normal textbook however incorperate the convienience of the iPad.  How do you think this evolution would affect not only the classroom setting but also society in general?  Also, are you in favor of the proposed idea?

  1. I think that this is a good idea. College textbooks are so expensive and I'm sure buying an electronic copy would be much cheaper for students. This evolution is already affecting society in a big way. Everywhere you go now you are seeing less and less books and more iPads, Kindles, and other tablets. Tablets are the future of education.

  2. I think this has a lot of potential, but at the same time I'm not sure I like the idea of apple taking over the textbook industry. Even if it gives them just a little bit more sway in our education I can see how that could be abused. But like I said it also has a lot of potential to make learning more fun and interactive. Definitely a lot more engaging. I guess for the time being I'm going to stay neutral but totally interested to see what happens from here.

  4. I understand that nearly everything is going digital these days. I think this can be both good and bad. I am a person that likes to have a book in front of me and be able to physically turn the page. However, The ipad has neat functions as we discussed including the interactive 3-D visuals and video incorporated into the text book. This can help give people extra learning opportunities and be able to understand it in another way that they couldn't just by reading or seeing a picture. Even though this is very helpful, I think by having each student have their own ipad, you would be giving them a lot of freedom to not just read from the ipad but play games, browse the web or watch tv. If these ipads are used appropriate, I think they could be a positive contribution to education.

  5. Although this seems like a very good idea my main concern is cost. I am sure books on the iPad would be cheaper than paper versions but you also have to take in the big fact that you first have to purchase the iPad, which is not cheap. Plus there is always some hidden costs and other nonsense. It would be very nice though to have the convienience of a small tool like that instead of 7 or 8 heavy books. This evolution will just push society more toward the future and may make learning more interesting and easier for young kids. More kids may stay in school if more technology is used. I am in favor of the idea but the cost of everything is my main concern seeing as how I pay for all my own stuff.

  6. I think that this would have a major affect on society. By eliminating textbooks and iPads instead this woudl ensure that many people would bee using technology in their everyday lives. For the most part yes I am in favor of thsi proposal but at the same time their are things that I am not too sure about as well. iPads are very expensive, this is a concern that almost everyone would have. Some students might not be able to afford an iPad for their classes. But other than how expensive they are I think that this is a good idea.

  7. This idea has both its up and downs. For those students who love computers and have it easier learning on line and over technology would benefit a lot from this but then again there are the students who learn better over textbooks and dont want anything to do with technology. so as long as they gave you the option of which one u want then yes this is a good idea

  8. It is a very cool idea to cut down costs and give people a different option compared to just having books. I can see a few problem with it though. Not everyone is technology savy and can you honestly say that when there is an iPad in front of you the first thing you are gunna do is look at a textbook. I can see students messing around on games and facebook and when the teacher comes near switching it back really quickly.

  9. Apple has already made a huge impact on the technological world and I believe that using textbooks on the i pad would be great for some students... but not all.... For me, I would hate to be reading on a screen. I have to have a book in my hand to get any reading done and I know if I had to read on a screen for any of my classes, that I would have a very hard time understanding the concepts. I do not want books to leave our world forever either. I feel like over all it is a good thought, but it does not fit everyone's needs. Also, I feel like it would be very expensive for everyone involved. Instead of buying $400 worth in books, we would have to buy a $1,000 i pad along with the text books to go on that I pad, so I do not really feel like it would be a good solution for those who do not have a lot of money and for people who like to read out of an actual book. The overall idea is good, but it would really not attract me to go to school.

  10. If I could save 400 dollars on buying college books than I most definately would be in favor of having our textbooks on Ipads. I feel like Ipads in the classroom would really be distracting, I would always be tempted to check something on the internet or play games in class.

  11. I think that the transition of text books to e-books right now is unrealistic unless the college books are dramatically cheaper, I don't want to spend 600 dollars for an e-reader that will be obsolete within 2 years. I don't think society will be impacted by this development, actual books will never be obsolete regardless of technology.

  12. This whole switch to ebooks and ipads and what not seems pretty cool, but i think it would take a while to switch over. Yeah college books are expensive but college books also don't have a battery you have to worry about. With electronics there is always the chance of it breaking. I think it would change the classroom alot cause people could just play with their ipads rather then do work. I'd say im neutral towards the idea.

  13. While the idea is good I'm not too sure how well it will hold up. Technology is forever advancing so the iPad one has now will only be obsolete in a short amount of time. The article said that starting High School book price is around $15. It never stated how much expensive college books would cost. I wouldn't want to have to buy a $700 iPad and still have to pay over $200 per e-book. I would rather stick to regular textbooks. I always have the option to sell them back once I'm done. With the e-book you won't be able to sell them back.

  14. i think this is a great idea because people will actually focus better. Its hands on and thats better for people. Technology is the new stuff around so why not use...

  15. I think that it is a cool idea. Instead of carrying around multiple books, a person could just carry a tablet computer and have all of their textbooks in front of them. The iPad is expensive, so it would be interesting to see if a company would make a cheaper tablet or if other tablets would use a sort of similar format to provide textbooks as well. I think it would impact society in that education could be more accessible and books would be cheaper. I am in favor of the idea, only I don't think that one company should have complete control over the issue.

  16. The idea is super awesome, and super expensive. It means well but thinking about it, some of my high school classes have been using the same text books since the year 1920, no joke. The physicall copy of the book is much cheaper and can out last the expensive tablet. Im all for apple, i buy my books on my iphone for easy reading and this makes me sound slightly hipcritical. I just cant imagine how a school would expect all its students to pay for a tablet, then pay for books. this kind of movement though would have a significant impact on our world, every day we move ever closer to being entirely dependent on technology.

  17. I do think the idea is cool but at the same time I think this idea can spiral down hill. Not only because must teachers love their textbooks but if they start making everything electronic the new generation is not going to know anything about textbooks and how to used them because their so stuck on electronics. Plus what happens if you can't afford it or your child has special needs and can't use it correctly, I honestly think the classrooms would be better off without.
