As technology continues advancing the rest of the world is forced to keep up or sectors slowly die off. The book market is no different. As tablets and laptops become more and more mainstream many publishers are forced to look at ways to enter those markets. Because of this they provide eBooks and other options for people to essentially view the original textbook in electronic form. Also, with the dominance of the internet and the offspring of online shopping many people turn to the internet to purchases all their books rather than dealing with the hassel of shopping through endless books at a bookstore.

Now here is an article about some of the risks of buying books online.

After reviewing these two articles what are your thoughts about book purchasing in general. Do you currently use eBooks or is it something you would like to explore? What are some pros and cons to this market that come to mind? What are the social implications of this practice?
(at least two paragraphs please!)
I think that using e-books is a good idea. I see people reading on their kindle or iPad all the time. I have bought a book on iBooks, but I have not actually started reading it yet.
ReplyDeleteSome pros are that it is really easy to download and purchase the book that you are looking for. Another pro is you can have all of your books on your tablet and not have to carry around all of your books at once. Some cons for this books publishers are losing money. I think the social implication for this is that people now have it easier to access their favorite books whenever and wherever they want.
I agree that it would be really easy to download and purchase a book and that an implication would be easier access to books.
DeleteI think book purchasing can be less stressful than most make it out to be. I do not currently use eBooks, but believe it is something that I would look into. I have read some things from the Ipad and it just seems to make it more exciting and a little easier to make my self do. Some pros to the eBooks would be the price of the books. By having them by electronic, a person can save a lot of money not having to buy the physical copy. A con however would be that technology does crash and if this happens your book could be lost. With a physical copy you do not have this problem. A social implication is that if people start using this eBooks purchasing, I think they will be more likely to leave reviews and discuss it with other interested people.
ReplyDeleteThe price of books is a good pro to look at. They are much cheaper then going to a barnes & noble, or some other book store.
DeleteIf I were to purchase a book, I definitely would go out and purchase one I can hold. One that I can turn the pages on, not one I have to swipe a screen to turn the page. I currently do not use eBooks, or any books. I am not much of a reader and if I ever do pick it up, it won't be an eBook.
ReplyDeleteSome pros to this market is it is what people are looking for. Most people prefer to just stay home, compared to having to go out in public and get something. Whether that is a book or groceries or anything. I think it really appeals to a lot of people's taste. Cons are: 1. Got to have an iPad or iPod or Tablet to get this sort of thing. 2. Gotta keep that thing charged. Nothing would ruin that great book then a dead battery. 3. Temptation to play games or check facebook instead of reading. 4. Having something to hold and turn the pages is more meaningful, at least I feel. If these eBooks really hit main steam, it will be a real game changer. A lot of stuff would start to switch. Books as we know it would start dying off.
Ya, I feel like real books mean a lot more then ebooks. They are not my favorite thing in the world and I would be really sad if they did die off.
DeleteI do not purchase books because I do not read too often nor do I read the same book again and again. I might read one of my favorites a couple of times, but I would much rather just go to a library and rent one out. It saves me a lot of money and I can still go get the book another time if I want to. I don't use eBooks and I would like to explore it a bit. I don't know too much about it and it would be nice to know a little more and maybe buy books this way.
ReplyDeleteSome of the pros of this market is that you can have a book almost anywhere, that is if you have a device to view them. You can also store many different books on the devices, so you could also have more as they wouldn't be big and bulky by being a hard copy. Some cons would be that you have to buy the book. I haven't seen an option to rent the book. Maybe there is, but I don't know of such option. So you would always have to pay full price for a book that you may not end up liking. Another con would be that you would have to read the books on a screen and not on paper. It's nicer to read something off of paper than on a screen. I think the social implications would be that there wouldn't be as many hard copies and everybody would have books on their phones and tablets. People would maybe read more, but hard copy sales would go down even though more books are selling.
Library is a good idea, for sure better then buying a book
DeleteI don't tend to buy books because I don' read very much. I don't think I would use ebooks if I did either. eBooks requires you to buy an ipad or kindle. I think it would be much nicer to just actually own the book.
ReplyDeleteSome pros to doing the eBooks Would be the convenience of it though. It is very easy to download and get access to. A con would be that authors aren't making as much money. A social implication to this would be less social interaction in general. It seems like it would inhibit the chance to interact at the bookstore and anywhere else you might stop on the way.
Reading is for chumps.
DeleteI think ebooks are a good thing, but it is a something that can also be very dangerous. It seems like a person would have to check through every bit of information to make sure that they are getting the right book. I am honestly to lazy to get on a computer and find a book and read it from a nook or a kindle, but my sisters love it. I personally like the feel of books and being able to touch them. It gives me the experience. When it comes to college textbooks, I would like to try and buy books and read them off of an i pad or something. I feel like that would be a very smart and economical way to read a textbook. It is all interesting to me, and I would love to figure out how to do the process.
ReplyDeleteSome Pros and const to that industry, is the spaming. I guess I will never know if I will get the right book. Also, once you buy it I do not thing a person can get a refund on it. Some pros would be that fact that we will not kill as many trees. We will not need to cut down so many trees for paper and that is always a benefit. Also, they seem to be cheaper with an e-book. I think ebooks are still in their beginning stage, but I feel like they will be the thing of the future. I think that they will take over the book industry and we will not have to buy anymore books from a bookstore, but we will just buy books online and that kind of makes me sad. I love books, but I cannot change the rapid movement of technology.
Much like seemingly everything in the news they make it sound a lot worse than it actually is. The article made it sound like you are going to buy a fake book, but if one would do a quick research on the book you are planning on buying you can determine if it is a fake or the real deal. I don't read a lot but I do have one eBook. It is pretty convenient to have for someone who is a big reader, you don't have to lug around 50 books. You can have them all in one place.
ReplyDeleteSome pros would be the convenience. The eBooks tend to be cheaper than a physical copy of a book. Some cons are that you have to own some sort of eBook player. The occasional reader might not want to go out and buy one of these. You cannot resell eBooks that you purchased. So if you didn't like the book, sucks to be you.
I personally have never used eBooks before but I am willing to try it out. If I was going to buy a book I would rather go into a bookstore and look around at the other available books in the store. I am not sure if I would want to use eBooks or not, I like to have an actual copy of the book in my hands when reading.
ReplyDeleteSome of the pros that go along with this idea are that by using eBooks for school students would not have to carry around heavy books from class to class anymore. The books would just be on a computer or tablet of some kind. Some of the cons are that to use the books in the class room students may have to purchase the electronic to view their book on and this could become expensive to some. The social implications of this practice would be that now a person has the option to read a book a different way than just a normal book.
I would love the lighter book load but then I would worry about my tablet dying from constant use in each class. You would also have to watch your tablet constantly because you never know if someone would steal it or hack info on it.
DeleteI like to go to the bookstore and physically grab a copy of the book I want to read. To me something about having the actual book means more when I read it, plus I can literally take it any where without worrying about an electronic device getting damaged. Reading on a screen for too long is hard for me and I like to be able to fill my bookshelves with everything I have read. I do not use eBooks and I have never considered doing so. Using eBooks is really a personal preference so anything anyone says is just opinion.
ReplyDeleteThere are always pros and cons with every aspect of life. The biggest con I see is about Amazon and books that are very similar to each other. Many people may not pay close enough attention online when they are ordering and mistakenly purchase the wrong book. This would drive me insane if it happened to me, but I have a feeling if those people actually had the book in their hands and looked it over they would notice the fake right away. The social implications of this are a quicker access to books but backlash with pricing and fake books. The technology used to read eBooks will become larger and paper copy may die out for daily read books. If this happens and humanity dies and so does technology then we will never have any hard copy books left behind.
I agree with you. I would personally rather going to a bookstore and phyically have the book in my hand to read rather than read it on an electronic device.

ReplyDeletePersonally i enjoy both, i still go to the store and purchase books however if i am that impatient i will buy it through ibooks on my iphone and read it there. I enjoy that i can pull that up and read anywhere opposed to having to lug my book around however i do enjoy physicaly having a book in my hands.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest con with ebooks is you can illegally download them just like with mp3's. Pros are they are portable, cut back on paper use, they are cheaper and they last forever.
