The web is buzzing....

One quick look on the CNN Tech homepage and it is very evident what is currently dominating techology news....social networking.  From the sale of Instagram to the growth of Pinterest there is multiple articles creating a vast overview of the good, the bad, and the ugly advances that are happening in technology today.  Pick one article that interests you dealing with social media.  Read the article and post the link in your reply.  Then write a 2 - 4 paragraph response about the topics discussed in the article.  Then write one more paragraph about your thoughs about the topic in general and where you can see it popping up in to society trends.

Here is one I liked....

This article was about workers using internet sites such as youtube and pandora on company time. This was not only wasting company time, but was also causing the internet to run extremely slow because of the amount of time spent on the sites. The article reported that on a typical day workers were watching 50,000 five minute youtube videos and listening to 4,000 songs from pandora. This numbers were crazy to me because these people were suppose to be working.

Although these numbers were big, the amount of time spent on these sights did not really surprise me. I always find my self logging on to watch dumb youtube videos or just look at stupid things when I am bored. These workers must have had their work done or were not busy enough to have the time to do this. I think this is a no win for companies with the internet. Most need the internet to run their business and cannot block off all internet access.

The article talked about the company blocking youtube and pandora. It also talked about the company using youtube as a sales tool so they had to unblock it. I think that somehow these workers internet access will be monitored more strictly and workers will be held responsible for using personal internet time on company time. I could relate to these workers in the article because whenever I am bored I always find myself wasting a lot of time on the internet.

I think this is interesting because the response to timeline is so polarized, it's either you like it or you don't. I think it's ok because I like the way it displays my information and makes it easier for people to look through my great posts. I think that people don't like it because it's something new and it changes something that people have gotten used to over the years and they just don't understand how to work it.

    1. Some people don't know what it is, these people are known as people who don't have facebook. I think it's not a huge deal and the complaining about the transition is like the definition of first world problems.

The article that I chose to read was about the social network Pinterest. The reason that I chose this article is because I find it interesting to see what others post on this site. On this social networking site a person can post pictures of things that they like to do, their fashion choices, favorite recipes, places they would like to visit and simply just whatever they feel like posting at the time.

In this article the writier talks about how fast Pinterest has grown. It is the third leading social network as of right now. Pinterest was established in March of 2010 and in the past six months has rapidly grown to 104 million visits. The site's co-founder also stated that they will be creating a new iPad app and new pinboards coming soon.

I think that this site was a very good idea. People can now share what they like with people everywhere by just pinning a picture to a pinboard. I think Pinerest will be something that everyone will come to like at any age.

The article I read was about Twitter filing lawsuits against three companies and two people for spamming on Twitter. These companies basically hack tweeting topics and attach marketing and messaging that do not belong. Twitter has finally decided to step up and take action against them.
Twitter has also been stepping up there anti-spam power because of this. But it is taking a long time because they are fighting against so many spammers. They plan to keep increasing their anti-spam protection, but are going to stop the main providers of the spam to finally end the problem. Some of the companies they are taking to court have already stopped but a couple are still up and running.

I think that it is good that Twitter is filing charges against these people and companies. If Twitter wanted all the extra messaging and marketing then they would have done it themselves. I have never used Twitter and probably never will but I can see where all the extra marketing that would pop up when something was clicked on would be annoying. I can see this popping up in social trends because if Twitter doesn't get the problem fixed and keep the spam down people could possibly quit using Twitter.

Kinda interesting. Since there is no dislike button on facebook an app has been made where you can list things that you don't like. It is a way to bond with people who have similar disinterests as you do. The creator of EnemyGraph said he did not like facebook's niceness so he created the app. The app finds friends of yours who like something that you dislike and makes that presence known to you.

I don't see this catching on as a trend cause it seems like it will just lead into awkward situations and nobody wants that. I wouldn't want an app that shows me the people who I should hate according to likes and dislikes.

In my article, they talked about a take-over that Facebook did to sort of protect their turf. Facebook bought out Instagram, and users aren't very happy. Instagram is an app that 33 million users use to take and post pictures they have just taken. It was completely separate from Facebook and because it hasn't gotten very popular, it was also a very close knit group. One person had said that he had 800 some friends on FB, but only 67 on Instagram and that he knew all of those 67 friends pretty well.

There was such a backlash when this news was announced, people started pulling their photos off of Instagram. Instagram users boosted from the usual 400 visits per day to around 25,000. The users wanted to protect their photos and keep their photos their's. Facebook has announced that they will keep the two separate, but the Instagram users weren't taking any chances. They used Instaport, which is something that could pull their pictures off their profile and onto their phone, to reassure their pictures are safe.

I think that FB has gotten a little out of hand. All I ever see on my wall anymore is that someone has liked a photo that usually has a caption like, "Like if... blah blah blah." It has really gotten annoying. I go on FB to see what my friends are doing tonight and so forth, not to see some person who has some photo editing software post a picture that is from everyone's childhood. It is like those people think that is what matters in life, having a huge number of likes on a photo. Overall, I like FB when I can see what my friends post.

  7. http://money.cnn.com/2012/04/06/technology/twitter-spam-lawsuit/index.htm

Twitter recently started an attempt to crackdown on spam on its website. The company filed a lawsuit against five of its biggest spam enablers, the article said. This included three accounts owned by two different companies and even two individual users. The lawsuit is aimed to deter those who make the spamming tools for others to then use.

One day after the lawsuit was filed, many of the websites named in the lawsuit were offline. So, it would appear the lawsuit is working. Twitter has said it has spent around $700,000 in an attempt to stop spam on its website, which has more spam than even Facebook or Google.

Twitter has bought a company that deals with technology aimed at fighting spam and has stepped up its efforts with new anti-spam software. It is a tough battle, as individual people contribute to the problem when they "buy" followers off of eBay, which typically are spam accounts that are bought.

I think it is a good thing that there is some effort to remove spam from social networking sites. It is annoying to be reading something and then a post comes up advertising a product or company. I think that, should Twitter's lawsuit work, more and more companies will file similar lawsuits against people who build the spamming tools or even individual spammers themselves. In time, spam could almost be eliminated from the internet, however, this is something that would take a long time and thus is unlikely.

This article was about the company twitter cracking down on spammers. I guess twitter has had a long existing problem with people creating ways to make spamming easier. This lawsuit takes aim at the people making spamming easier. The software would take keywords that are in trending topics and just start randomly sending messages out. There were 5 people that were charged in the suit. The company used $700,000 to prevent this from happening any more. Twitter was hoping that by doing this it will deter people from doing it again.
I think the whole thing is a great idea. Spamming is always super annoying and anything that works to stop it is great. I don't use twitter so i don't know how bad of a problem it is, but i'm sure it will be nice that they are cracking down on it.

  9. http://www.cnn.com/2012/04/10/tech/social-media/facebook-uncool-instagram/index.html

I picked the article called "Is Facebook becoming uncool" The article discsses two major things, their purchase of Instagram and how Facebook is losing viewers. They purchased Instagram last week for 1 Billion dollars, and facebook is not a 30 billion dollar company. People are very upset that facebook is not a small company anymore. People are sad that Facebook has become so big and about all the information that Facebook has released about its users.
That leads me to my next point about how Facebook has been losing its viewers. Many people have become upset with how Facebook is set up and by how many people are on Facebook. When I was reading the article, they said that many younger people are not willing to use Facebook because of all the older people that also use it. They also dislike how huge the company has become. They do not listen to their users and are afraid that they are just in it for the money.
Personally, I do not mind Facebook. I do not use it a lot though. I also hate the new Wall format. The timeline format or something. It was never something I really enjoyed. I think that they were wrong to buy out the smaller company, because they are now making a lot of users angry. I would like to see how facebook progress and gets over this hurtle.
